Annotated Bibliography

            Organic foods are an interesting topic because not many people know about the facts. A lot of people think that organic foods are better for your health rather than non-organic foods but that is not always the case. These articles down below explain more about what are organic foods, and give information regarding organic/non-organic foods, also some pros and cons for both.

Pros of Organic Foods:

Group, Edward. (2013, September 30). 6 Health Benefits of Eating Organic Food. Global Healing Center.

In this article Dr. Edward Group gives us some basic information about how organic foods are healthier. He gives us six benefits which are, No GMOs, better nutrition, no pesticides or herbicides, higher quality meat and dairy, and better for you conscience. One that really stuck out to me was better nutrition. We all probably know that when we refer to organic foods but do not know the facts. He states, “one study showed that organic fruits and veggies contain 27% more vitamin C, 21.1% more iron, 29.3% more magnesium, 13.6% more phosphorus, and 18% more polyphenols”. Giving us statistical information to help us understand organic produce is another reason to look at this article.


Meyerowitz, Steve. Are Organic Foods More Nutritious? Organic Education.

In this article Meyerowitz talks about the benefits of organic foods but mainly talking about the vitamins and minerals that organic foods contain. Meyerowitz states, “in a review of 400 published papers comparing organic and nonorganic foods, Soil Association Certification Ltd. Of the United Kingdom reported that organic crops were higher in essential minerals, phytonutrients, and vitamin C”. This was interesting because I never really knew about minerals and phytonutrients. I knew about vitamin C but was not very educated about the other topics. This article does a good job explaining what exactly are those things, which makes the topic only stronger because of the factual evidence. But a fact I really enjoyed reading was when Meyerowitz states, “In a 2002 University of Missouri study, chemists were shocked to discover the smaller organically grown oranges delivered 30 percent more vitamin C than the large conventionally grown ones”. This article is definitely for the people who want more in depth factual information regarding the minerals and vitamins in organic foods.

In this article the author talks mainly about the nutritional benefits that organic foods have. Morin states, “conventional foods contained greater concentrations of residual pesticides and the toxic metal cadmium. This shows clearly that organically grown fruits, vegetables and grains deliver tangible nutrition and food safety benefits”. This information definitely makes you think about what you are eating. But the author giving us all this statistical information, it just makes us think more about how organic foods can be more beneficial. The author made the article very simple to understand, so this can definitely be some help for people trying to get information fast, and people who are trying understand the benefits of organic foods.


Mosbergen, Dominique. (2014, July 7). Organic Food Has More Antioxidants, Less Pesticide Residue: Study. The Huffington Post.

In this article, “Organic Food Has More Antioxidants, Less Pesticide Residue: Study”, Dominique Mobergen discusses about “a new study conducted by researchers at Newcastle University, the researchers said that organic fruits, vegetables, and cereals contain significantly higher concentrations or antioxidants than conventionally grown crops. They added that the organic produce were found to have lower levels of toxic metals and pesticides” (The Huffington Post). Which is showing that is one reason of why organic foods can be healthier.


Zuraw, Lydia. (2014, July 15). Study Finds Organic Foods Have More Benefits. Food Safety News.

This article is basically like the rest of the articles showing us the benefits of organic foods. But this talks more about the antioxidants, and how “organic foods contain higher levels of it rather than conventionally grown versions” (Food Safety News). Zuraw states, The researchers suggest that switching to eating organic fruit, vegetables and cereals provide consumers 20- to 40-percent more antioxidants, which would be equivalent to eating between one to two extra servings of fruit and vegetables a day”. This is an important fact that many of us would like to know because without much knowledge about antioxidants, and what they are, a little fact like this can change our minds about organic foods.


Cons of Organic Foods:

In this article the author just gives us a list of some cons of organic foods. The seven that Raw Food Diet mentions are, price, diversity, small production, certified organic, time constraints, shorter shelf life, and bugs. One that stood out to me was price, the author states that, “organic food usually, if not always, is more expensive than conventionally grown food”. Which was interesting because price can always be an issue if people are on a budget. But the author also states that, “they found that sometimes the higher cost is only pennies higher”. I also thought that the shorter shelf life was a simple one. Many people like to keep foods sitting around but the author states, “to get the freshest organic food possible, buy locally from a organic farmer and plan to use your food in a few days”. Although, the pros outweigh the cons on organic foods, there will always be controversy discussing the topic.


Powell-Smith, Michelle. (2015, May 14). Why Is Organic Food Bad? Live Strong.

In this article the author talks about how organic foods can be a burden. The author just gives us a list, and makes it very easy to understand because she writes a sub topic then gives us information about the topic. Topics like cost, productivity, time and skill etc. My favorite topic was when the author talked about spoilage because she talked about information that I did not know about. For example, she states, “Organics are not treated with preservatives, waxes or other chemicals. This may reduce their shelf life and allow for faster spoilage”. I am a person that usually leaves a lot of my foods out for a while, and if I am a buyer, knowing that organic foods can spoil faster makes me think if organic foods are the way to go. So, this article was very interesting giving us interesting information that makes us second guess organic foods.


Smith, Doug. (2013, March 19). Eating Organic may be Harmful-The Truth Behind Organic Produce. Elephant Journal.

In this article Doug Smith just gives his side of why organic foods may be harmful. Smith states, “just because it is a “natural” pesticide, that does not necessarily mean it is better or even good for you at all”. Smith also states that, “the EPA and USDA have conducted many studies over the last few decades showing synthetically used pesticides, or any chemical for that matter, are seriously carcinogenic- a little more than 50 percent of them. A carcinogen leads to a high susceptibility for cancer creation within the human body”. Hearing the word cancer can frighten anybody, and knowing that it is a possibility to receive it from organic foods makes you wonder, are organic foods actually better for your health?


Topics talking about Organic Foods in general:

Robinson, Lawrence. Segal, Jeanne. Segal, Robert. Organic Foods: All You Need to Know. Help Guide.

In this article the authors give general information that people wonder about pertaining to organic foods. The authors talk about some of the benefits, but also talk about some controversy. Some benefits they mention are, “Organic foods contains fewer pesticides, organic food is often fresher, organic food is GMO free, etc”. I found this article very useful because there was a lot of information that was in this article that I have not seen in other articles. I like how the authors gave like subtopics relating to the main topics. For example, when they talk about how organic foods have fewer pesticides, they give information about the possible risk of pesticides, like how it can “increase risk of certain cancers, children and fetuses are most vulnerable, etc”. This article was very useful, and taught me a lot about information regarding organic foods.
